Gender Wayang is a 10-key metallophone played in pairs, each pair tuned an octave higher from another pair, and set in the Slendro scale. It is a distinctive instrument that requires two players, where one focuses on the melody with the left hand while the other handles the interlocking parts known as kotekan with the right hand, creating a harmonious ensemble akin to a miniature Gamelan orchestra.

Gamelan Gender serves as an invaluable tool for practice and musical exploration. By playing the polos part while the Gamelan Gender handles the sangsih, users can learn different parts of traditional pieces, memorize loops, and even compose their own music in MIDI format using a sequencing program for import into Gamelan Gender. Furthermore, its keys are adjustable to match the tuning of authentic instruments, which is crucial as each set of Gender Wayang has its unique tuning.

It exclusively supports MIDI file imports and lacks email file sharing capabilities. Additionally, it cannot run in the background. Alternatively, the full version presents added support for USB-MIDI-in, enabling users to play Gender sounds through their MIDI controller for an enhanced musical experience.
